16. Dr. Stephen Strange (East/Southeast Asian) – S6 Racial Draft

The reimagined #RacialDraft backstory for East Asian Dr. Strange is as follows:

Stephen Okashii Strange is the son of Japanese parents. He was born and raised in New York City, where his parents reminded him each and every day about the things they sacrificed to raise him in a city filled with opportunities.

Stephen would go on to study in the medical field at Columbia University, which made his parents proud, but they would still constantly berate him, pushing him to do more. This led Stephen to stop seeking his parents’ approval.

His colleagues were impressed by his surgical skills, giving him the vote of confidence that he so desperately lacked from his parents. However, this drove Stephen to become cocky and arrogant towards others, expecting them to do better to keep up with him. He became one of the leading neurosurgeons in the world.

One night when Stephen was on his way to his parents’ place, he was overly focused on a speech he had prepared that highlighted his success and his decision to no longer support his parents. He became distracted and got into a terrible accident. The accident shattered the bones in his hands and damaged his nerves, making him unable to perform surgery.

In the aftermath of the accident, Stephen’s parents supported their son, taking him to the best doctors they could, but no one could help. Alas, Stephen had exhausted the limits of Western medicine. However, because Stephen was instilled with the traditional Japanese value of “Ganbaru” — to fully commit oneself to a task and see it to its conclusion — he persevered. He went out to seek Eastern medicine, leading him to Kamar-Taj and The Ancient One. And you know the rest.
